| The before picture shows yellow, bent teeth. The after shows stright, sparkling
white teeth. The before picture shows the profile of a woman with a large crooked
nose, the after shows the same profile with a gentle ski sloped nose. The before
a rusted car, the after a shiny red paint job. These are the photographic images
that litter our magazines and newspapers; exaggerated and often poorly shot commercial
propoganda. Within the altered images and corrupt depictions of product enhancement
lies a curious art form of storytelling told through the trusted lens of a camera.
On June 8th, 2001, Vital 5 Productions presented an exhibition featuring the
works of thirty-six photographers, all exploring the realm of before and after
diptychs. The Before and After exhibit reveals a concert of narrative so raw and
contagious that the observer cannot help but investigate these fabrications for
signs of authenticity. Are they real or are they fake? Do you believe what you
see. The days of the photograph always telling the truth are over, but Before
and After makes the observer approach with great caution. |
