On October 19th, Vital 5 continued its exploration into the value of art with a beautiful exhibition of forgeries. From Bacon to Basquiat, Monet to Modigliani, Kahlo to O'Keefe, Seattle painters took on the masters of the twentieth century and challenged the notions of value, talent and the ownership of imagery. Pound for pound, stroke for stroke, Vital 5 presented a collection of the centuries best and the Northwest artists that could so convincingly fake their work.

Picasso, Chagall, Hopper, Cornell, Johns, Klee, Monet, Duchamp, Matisse, Sargent, Balthus and Schiele just marked the half way point of twentieth century talent. With over fifty million dollars worth of paintings and sculpture represented under one roof, FAKE posed a machine gun fire of questions that no one held the immediate answers to. Each piece held the same dimensions and were composed of the same medium of the original, only the signature was missing. So what makes an artist's work so valueable? Could you really tell the difference between a five million dollar Bacon and a five hundred dollar reproduction? When art becomes a commodity are you buying the paint, or are you buying some intangible idea that transcends the physical material? Is a five foot by seven foot Lichtenstein really worth 3 million? I have no idea, but this show was not presented as a disrespect to the master artists that originally created them, it was an inquiry into the mystique behind fame, money, and the original idea.
