| Sometimes my friends tell me that I have to meet one of their friends, who
is a great artist that they know I will like. Of course this always scares the
shit out of me, because the likelihood of this being true is far and remote. Every
once in a while, you have to eat your words and realize that sometimes your friends
are dead on right. Jason came down to the gallery on a Tuesday night and within
ten minutes we were looking at the calendar and scheduling Jason's first solo
exhibition. As a painter and set designer, Jason proposed a fresh twist on an
old format- the Coney Island cut out painting. You've seen the muscle man and
bikini clad lady on the beach, the fisherman and the giant shark- carnival paintings
that you pay a buck, stick your head threw a hole and have your picture taken
in a two dimensional landscape. The twist is that usually you are doing something
cool, or looking cool or strong, sexy, you get the idea. But with Jason's cut
out paintings, it was all the places you wouldn't want to be, all the people you
wouldn't want to be. The suicide painting, childbirth, shot in Vietnam, hailing
Hitler, shooting heroin, compromised sexual poses, having a mammogram, crucified.
This interactive exhibit featured a photographer to document the awkward, the
painful, the humiliating. We had a carnival band play, served popcorn and hotdogs-
it was an environment that just can't be captured in text and photos. Jason Puccinelli
has since become a staple artist at Vital 5, and his humor, talent and ambition
insure great things to come. |
