PROCESS PHYSICS
August 2 - September 2, 2002

A kinetic, interactive sculptural installation
by Chris McMullen

Math is Dangerous. On August 2nd, Vital 5 Productions was proud to present the opening of Process Physics- a site specific, interactive kinetic sculptural installation by Seattle artist Chris McMullen. Constructed of steel, stone, and canvas belts, this ambitious sculpture occupied over 2,500 cubic feet and was the product of hundreds of hours of labor. Process Physics was at its very heart a study of numbers and labor, of Coppernican styled equations and Luddite inspired romance.

Chris McMullen occupies the curious domain of installation art in the spirit of jean Tinguely and Claes Oldenburg. His obsession with gears and pulleys translates human powered energy into a series of audience inclusive, animated stroboscopes. If Dr. Seuss and Henry Ford became business partners in the mid- 1800's, their factory might have looked something like Chris McMullen's installation. Process Physics was a beatiful machine that engauged simple technology to challenge modern work ideals, human interaction and art itself. It was an industrial cartoon of intimidating proportions. The posted warning signs that lined the gsllery's interior walls were not for mere show. Math is dangerous.

Chris McMullen is a twenty-nine year old Seattle sculptor. He has exhibited his work at Secluded Alley Works, The Bemis Building, Forgotten Works Gallery, Brewtown Arts and Cafe Venus. For more information on Chris McMulen and to view previous work, please visit: www.chrismcmullenproductions.com
